As AI chips place increasingly higher demands on performance and integration, advanced packaging and substrate technologies have become crucial in semiconductor competition. Samsung Electro-Mechanics is reportedly building a new multilayer ceramic capacitor (MLCC) embedded semiconductor substrate production line at its Vietnam factory to consolidate its position in the AI semiconductor supply chain.
Industry sources revealed that Samsung Electro-Mechanics has begun planning related equipment investments and is evaluating the introduction of new process equipment. The company is also working with existing local substrate suppliers and may outsource some processes to speed up capacity construction and technology application.
MLCC embedded substrate refers to pre-designing a cavity inside the substrate so that passive components such as MLCCs can be directly embedded into it. Compared with the traditional method of placing components on the substrate surface, this structure effectively shortens the circuit path and reduces parasitic inductance and impedance, thereby improving signal integrity and power supply stability.
According to reports, Samsung Electro-Mechanics has jointly developed relevant process equipment with its partners and plans to begin purchasing it soon. Industry insiders pointed out that the company is actively building a mass production system for MLCC embedded substrates and will continue to invest over the next few years to improve the production line and supply chain ecosystem.
It is worth noting that Samsung Electro-Mechanics has previously supplied such products in small quantities to some customers. This expansion marks a major transition from trial production to large-scale supply. With the rapid growth of AI servers and high-performance computing (HPC) applications, demand for power integrity (PI) and packaging density is increasing, and competition in the embedded passive component substrate market is becoming increasingly fierce.
Market reports show that multiple AI semiconductor companies and large technology companies are evaluating Samsung Electro-Mechanics' solutions. However, actual implementation depends on product reliability verification, yield improvement, and system-level design adjustments.
In terms of competition, MLCC embedded substrates remain an emerging application area, and there is currently no clear market leader. Although Samsung Electro-Mechanics has a first-mover advantage, its long-term competitiveness depends on mass production capabilities, cost control, and customer acceptance speed.
In addition, Samsung Electro-Mechanics is exploring integrating silicon capacitors into the substrate architecture. Compared with traditional MLCCs, silicon capacitors offer lower impedance and better power stability under high-frequency conditions, making them a very promising direction for future advanced packaging technology. However, this technology is still in the early stages of development and a commercialization timeline has not yet been determined.
Overall, as AI chips place increasing demands on packaging and power management, embedded passive component substrates are transitioning from the technology verification stage to the early industrialization stage. Samsung Electro-Mechanics' expansion reflects accelerating trends in passive component and substrate integration and is expected to become a key element in the advanced packaging ecosystem.
